Theories in Roulette
The Probability Theory was born out of Pascal's understanding of odds and chance and he was able to calculate it in a scientific way. He theorized that when rolling dice, the number 6 would show up at least one time in 24. He showed that 24 rolls would be against the gamble, but 25 rolls would be slightly more in his favor.
Since the dawn of gambling, players have tried to find ways to beat the house. They have schemed and strategized on ways to beat the system. So, many believe that just in case someone proves to be a modern-day Pascal, casinos have maximum bets.
No matterwhat table gameor slot that you are playing at, there is a limit as to what you can bet. You will never find a place that has an unlimited bet posted. The belief by some is that the reason isn't that casinos cannot pay if you would happen to 'take the house.' The reason is that it proves Pascal's system as being true. There are minimum bets that match a ratio of maximums.
Minimum Bet Theory
The American Roulette wheel is made up of 37 segments, numbered from 0-36, with 18 black numbers, 18 red numbers and 1 green zero. The Table The table can accommodate up to eight players and the game is run by a dealer who is responsible for all aspects of the game. Corner bet / Quad bet. You place this bet by having your chip such that it is touching all the four corners of the number you are betting. This is regarded as the worst bet in roulette since it has the highest house edge at 7.89%. Basket bet is a five number bet on zero, double zero and numbers 1, 2, and 3. The American Roulette wheel is made up of 37 segments, numbered from 0-36, with 18 black numbers, 18 red numbers and 1 green zero. The Table The table can accommodate up to eight players and the game is run by a dealer who is responsible for all aspects of the game. The casino has a massive collection of slot games – over 1,700 in number – with betting denominations reaching from 2c to R100. Amongst the slots are 100 Progressive Jackpots for the gambler to win big. The slots can be played with a Montecasino SmartCard which enables fuss-free, coinless gaming and maximum security. If the casino allows a maximum bet of $1000 on a 35-1 straight-up, then on each 17-1 split connected to that straight-up, $2000 may be wagered. Each 8-1 corner that covers four numbers) may have $4000 wagered on it. Each 11-1 street that covers three numbers may have $3000 wagered on it. Each 5-1 sixline may have $6000 wagered on it.
The minimum bet theory suggests that the minimum bet is actually the way to control who plays where. In the early days of Vegas, everyone was encouraged to step up to the table and wager a simple bet. This was all well and good until it started getting very busy and there were not enough babysitters to manage the random dreamer if you will.
So, placing minimums controlled the crowd. Typically people with smaller bankrolls were relegated to slots. Today this isn't the case. But back when minimums were initiated, it made a difference. Today, minimum bets are used to fill the seats. The more people playing at tables, the greater the likelihood novices will join in, resulting in the birth of new players.
Along with the lower bet scenario is the higher minimum to ensure that serious players have the focus and seamless play that they are accustomed to. Many times, live casinos will change the minimum bet right in the middle of the game. If the table becomes crowded and too many large bets were paid out, it is not unusual for the pit boss to inform players that the minimum bet will be increased at a given time.
You can typically expect it on a weekend day as the sun begins to set and the liquor begins to flow. Some would call it a sucker moment. Online casinos are not as prone to this type of mischievous behavior. Rather, the limits are more set in stone. In some cases, you can set your own minimum bet much like a multi-denomination slot machine. Thus, digital gaming has much greater player flexibility and control.
Maximum Bet Theory
The maximum bet is a foolish bet. Unless you are a high roller with an unlimited bankroll, the idea of reaching the maximum bet at a casino online or live indicates that someone is searching for fool's gold. The best bet in the house is to know your limits and find that middle ground.
Some authors of gambling theories suggest that the maximum bet as identified by the house should be ignored by you, that a player should determine their maximum bet prior to sitting down at the table. So, one theorist mentioned identifying 3% of your total bankroll as the maximum bet. This is actually considered a very liberal bet. So, your maximum bet should be around 3% of your total bankroll. If your bankroll is only $100, then you will need to bet no more than $3 a bet.
Of course, you can increase that bet as your bankroll increases. For people who really want to master Roulette with minimal bankrolls, the online or mobile roulette tables would probably be the best bet. Most online roulette games will utilize RNG - i.e. Random Number Generation - meaning that the numbers that come up are very random and the likelihood of finding a bias is minimal at best. It is a good way to build up your bankroll so that you can go for your maximum at a live casino if that is your desire.
With that said, it is not wise to play at a table if the minimum bet is $15 and your bankroll is only $100. The main idea when playing any games either live or at an online casino is to maintain as much of your bankroll as you can.Without a bankroll, you cannot stay in the game. Think like Pascal: the longer you are in it, the greater chance you will win it.

The Complete Bet is a high table max coverage bet that covers all of the inside bets for an individual number. This is a bet that is usually played by high rollers and is also known as a Maximum Bet (although in theory you could also add some outside bets to the pot). You would cover the even money bets and the columns and dozens that contain the number, but normally a Complete bet just involves the inside Bets. We also explain how to lay a Complete Bet on the number 23 in our numbers section, or scroll down for an explanation of how to make a Complete 17 bet.
A Mike Ashley Favourite
This is the famous Mike Ashley bet, the owner of English Premiership side Newcastle, who famously made a complete bet on his lucky number 17 in Mayfair, in 2008, and won £1.3 million.
To play the bet at a club, you’d need to call “Complete Bet on 17” for example, or “17 to the maximum”. I haven’t seen any online roulette tables offering this as part of their call bets, so you’ll need to make up the bet manually.
Pros and Cons of the Complete Bet
- The Complete Bet spreads your risk across a bigger table area if you have a favourite number
- If the bet comes in on your number or near it, it pays off big
- It’s a way of maxing out on a single number, if you like – popular with players who want to make a scene at the table
- If the ball falls out of your covered zone, this is an expensive way of playing roulette. It’s often played as a one off.
Here’s how you would do it (for a Complete Bet on 17). The table limits vary from table to table- below is just an example). You will need 40 chips – this assumes the maximum bet on a single number is £100.
Bet Type & Numbers

- Straight-Up 17 1 £100
- Split 17, 14 2 £200
- Split 17, 16 2 £200
- Split 17, 18 2 £200
- Split 17, 20 2 £200
- Street 17, 16, 18 £ $300

- Corner 17, 18, 20, 21 4 £400
- Six Line 17, 16, 18, 13, 14, 15 6 £600
- Six Line Bet 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 £600
Total Bets Placed 40 £4000
The payout for this bet if your number comes in 9.8:1. Plus you get your original bet back of course.
You will also be paid out on the other numbers covered of course (to a lesser extent).

Graphic showing how many chips you need (of the same value) to make up complete bets of each number on a European Roulette table.
So, for example,
- Completing the Zero costs 17 pieces and pays 235 pieces.
- Numbers 1 and 3 cost 27 pieces and pay 297 pieces.
- Number 2 is a 36 piece bet and pays 396 pieces
- Number 27 – 30 pieces – pays out 294
- Numbers 34 and 36 each cost 18 pieces and pay 198 pieces.
- Number 35 is a 24 piece bet which pays 264 pieces.
If you want to make a Complete Bet, but not at the table limits, ame sure you qualify your request to the croupier, and say something like “Complete Bet on 17 with £25”. That’s 40 bets for a total of £1000.
Where Can You Play a Complete Bet Online?
We haven’t seen this bet as a specific option on too many online variants- but you can play it on Playtech’s Multi-Wheel roulette (just de-activate the extra wheel if you only want to play one wheel). Click on the little button that says “More Bets” and you will have an option to play a Half Complete bet (just the Inside Bets) and a Complete Bet (including Outside Bets).
